An all-rounded Affair: 3-Phase Load Simulation now with programmable Current Curves!

REGATRON has added another dimension to its regenerative AC power supply units TC.ACS: In AC load mode, the shape of the load current can now be programmed both in terms of waveform and phase angle! This opens further areas of application, some of them highly complex, in the field of system and plant testing as well as in the safety verification sector.

The regenerative AC power supply units REGATRON TC.ACS have found a firm place on the world market due to their versatile application possibilities both as programmable grid simulators and as powerful AC loads. In the field of simulating AC loads, new options have been added for programming both the current waveform and the phase angle in relation to a reference AC grid, thus opening further development, load and test options for devices and systems.

At a Glance

The new features for AC load simulation can be described as follows:

  • Load simulation with 1- to 3-phase current curves synchronous to the AC grid at the TC.ACS power output or with a reference applied to the analog inputs
  • Programmable phase shift relative to the reference to achieve inductive or capacitive load characteristics
  • Current curve of each phase can be configured independently
  • Simulation of harmonic currents (Fourier Tool)
  • Simulation of a current-dependent non-linear load behavior
  • Simulation of customer-specific voltage/current behavior (Datapoint Waveform Tool)

Thanks to the extensive programming options, a wide range of analysis and test tasks can be carried out for 1- to 3-phase applications without the need to purchase special hardware with a high load capacity. The REGATRON TC.ACS grid and load simulators offer highly efficient energy recovery, this is a further argument for carrying out even long lasting series of high-power tests in an economical and low-loss manner.

TC.ACS in Practice

The new features of TC.ACS provide the user with a wide range of options for both grid and load simulation. These range from relatively simple basic tasks to complex current and voltage forms, as are increasingly used in the areas of device and system tests and in safety checks on failure-prone systems. Keywords include:

  • Functions for main curves: phase failure (0 V or highly impedant), sine, cut sine, square, triangle, sawtooth, sine with harmonics (Fourier Tool), customized curves (Datapoint Waveform Tool) and pure DC
  • Creation of test sequences out of several sequential blocks
  • 1- to 3-phase simulations possible
  • Phases can be configured either dependent or independent of each other
  • Modulation functions in asynchronous operation: sine, cut sine, square, triangle, sawtooth, DC, ramp, exponential and step curve
  • Preview function: easy-to-interpret visualization of the programmed sequence
  • Saving, loading and copying test sequences
  • The new feature can be retrofitted to existing TC.ACS systems on site by operator

Operation and Configuration

In the ACSControl operating, service and analysis software, the new 'Block CC' and 'Sequence CC' tabs enable user-friendly control and configuration of current curves and test sequences. When opening the block or sequence tab, the user can choose between 1 to 3 phase or deactivated synchronization with an AC grid. Configured sequences or even individual blocks can be saved for later reuse. The convenient copy function enables the reuse of previously configured sequences and blocks, e.g. with changed synchronization settings.

The simulation of current curves by the REGATRON TC.ACS is an option called 'Full Waveform Generator CC' feature and can be retrofitted by the user in the field. The existing 'Current Control Mode' option has also been modified and expanded with the 'Basic Waveform Generator CC', a simplified version of the 'Full Waveform Generator CC'.
