Whether direct current, alternating current, pulsed operation, generator or load configuration, whether fine-resolution load analysis or brute overload testing, your REGATRON devices will support you with their high dynamics, accuracy and reliability!

An example

A REGATRON customer would like to set up a universal test and inspection rig in order to be able to model, test and analyze all current and future applications in the field of high-energy transmission. The following basic requirements are under discussion:

  • The system output of the test bench should be in the range of 150 kW / kVA and be expandable.
  • Operation of large inverter systems for PV, energy storage and other applications.
  • Tests and analyses of large charging systems (e-mobility) should be possible.
  • The system should enable analyses and tests of hybrid systems (interaction of different system components).

The main purpose of the system is to test and certify against specific product and grid standards.

A look at the system components used:

G5.UNV

The G5.UNV systems shown on the left offer space for a total of six 18 kW / 1000 V / 54 A modules per control cabinet. The first cabinet is fully equipped, the second is initially equipped with three modules and can be extended at a later date. The nine modules can be connected as individual channels or in a group configuration in parallel, series or mixed parallel/serial in order to achieve higher power, voltages and currents. The DC system output can be extended into the MW range.
The regenerative, modular universal power supply units of the G5.UNV series are equipped with all the necessary functions and software packages for a whole range of common laboratory and test applications in industry and science. The G5 series of bidirectional DC power supplies impresses with its unique features: exceptional resolution and accuracy of voltage and current, very high control dynamics, a high auto-ranging factor of three and adjustable output filter time constants. On the other hand, powerful and tried-and-tested software packages enable targeted and uncomplicated use in the following test and research areas:

TC.ACS

In addition to the G5.UNV systems, the 4-quadrant TC.ACS device series also offers a wide range of applications. The ACS system shown here is equipped with three 50 kVA modules. The modules can be operated both individually and in parallel to increase the system output to a maximum of 150 kVA. This output can of course be extended into the MVA range.
The regenerative AC power supply units TC.ACS from REGATRON have found a firm place on the world market due to their versatile application possibilities both as programmable grid simulators and as powerful AC loads. Outstanding features are above all the impressively extensive programmability, the modular system design, the dynamics and robustness of the devices as well as the intuitive operation of the ACSControl control, service, and analysis software. The following is an excerpt of the range of functions:

  • The Grid Simulation mode ‘GridSim’ with four fully controlled active outputs is a versatile tool for testing and analysing grid-connected systems. With its numerous functions, the TC.ACS enables the simulation of a wide range of grid conditions. The functional scope of the grid simulation mode is being continuously developed. Examples of this are the ‘High Impedance Mode’ for simulating phase failures and short-term grid interruptions as well as the ‘Grid Impedance Simulation’.
  • The ‘RLC Load Mode’ can simulate the behaviour of single-phase to three-phase reactive current circuits in real time within a bandwidth of DC to 1000 Hz. TC.ACS is thus able to replace bulky and expensive components such as power resistors, power capacitors and big inductors. The setting and tuning of the simulated component values is possible in full operation via the ACSControl user interface or via the available programming interfaces.
  • The ‘Power Mode’ offers a comprehensive solution for precise and flexible control of electrical power in three-phase systems. The versatile functions and simple configuration make it suitable for a wide range of applications.
  • The EMC test system offers complete and fully-compliant emission tests in accordance with various IEC/EN standards 61000-3-X by combining the TC.ACS grid simulator, an EMC standard test package and a TC.FLK flicker impedance network. The integration of the external flicker meter offers the user a recorded report of the measurements.
  • The EMC test system for standard-compliant immunity tests comprises the TC.ACS device, the ACSControl software with the additional EMC standard test package. For full compliance with IEC/EN 61000-4-X standards, the TC.ACS is combined with the TC.VSE device to test fast voltage transients <5 μs and current peaks up to 1000 A. The ACSControl software provides separate operation for each standard test with visualization of the voltage waveforms, trace and verification functions and automatic generation of a test report.

Possible application examples for this scope of delivery

a) Test of photovoltaic multi-string or central inverters with battery storage

The total of nine installed G5.UNV 18 kW / 1000 V channels can be used both as PV simulators for one or more strings and as battery simulators. The solar array simulation offers pre-programmed test procedures in accordance with IEC/EN 50530. The three 50 kVA TC.ACS units can be operated in parallel as a 150 kVA grid simulator or split into 50 kVA and 100 kVA units as a grid simulator and RLC load simulator or jointly as an RLC load simulator. The RLC load simulation can be used for an anti-islanding test setup. The RLC values are set so that the currents in the programmable AC load compensate for the currents feeding back into the grid or into the grid simulation. As soon as the correct parameters have been entered, the AC switches can be opened and the anti-islanding function of the device under test can be tested. All common mains standards such as VDE AR N 4105, VDE AR N 4110 (DIN VDE V 0124 100), IEC TS 63106 1, IEEE 1547.1 and UL 1741 can be programmed and tested.

b) EMC testing of converters of an energy storage system (ESS)

The G5.UNV devices can be used as battery simulators to simulate the DC side of the energy storage converter system. The TC.ACS enables standard-compliant EMC emission tests in accordance with IEC/EN 61000-3-X together with the external flicker impedance and the flicker meter. On the other hand, the TC.ACS together with the external voltage slope enhancer TC.VSE offers fully compliant EMC immunity tests in accordance with IEC/EN 61000-4. The TC.VSE unit switches the applied mains voltage within 5 µs in accordance with the standard and provides the required peak currents of up to 1000 A from the mains.
