Description

A DC load bank is an essential testing and commissioning tool used to simulate electrical loads on direct current (DC) power sources such as batteries, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), DC generators, chargers, DC / DC converters and fuel cells. By providing a controlled and measurable load, DC load banks enable performance verification, system validation, and preventive maintenance without the need to connect actual operational equipment to assess battery capacity, verify inverter outputs, and ensure proper load handling capabilities.

Application Example Fuel Cell Testing

A fuel cell stack typically behaves like a voltage source, whereas the fuel cell tester is operated in CC or CP mode. The characteristic curve of a fuel cell stack shows a very wide current-voltage range from ’open circuit’ operation to full load.
Fuel cell stacks have to be protected against reverse currents flowing back into the fuel cell stack, as this would result in performance degradation or even damage to the fuel cell. Therefore, application-specific settings shall avoid distinct overshoot and reverse currents into the fuel cell stack.

As an alternative to parameterisation, it would also be conceivable to use diodes to prevent reverse currents. The disadvantages of this solution are the additional installation, a considerable power loss and the limited dynamic characteristics of this element when the current is changing from forward to reverse direction

Parameterization example of a 36 kW, 1000 V, 108 A device: Set-value step current -97..0 A@333VDC in <50 us with overshoot (top or in <200 us w/o overshoot (bottom) to avoid overshoot into the fuel cell stack.
