Charger Testing
Routine Work for REGATRON Power Supplies
Comprehensive testing of battery chargers requires both powerful DC power supply units for the charging circuit and versatile programmable single- and three-phase mains simulators for the public grid connection. Only with this test combination is it possible to simulate the extended
source and load situations that occur in the real world. With REGATRON’s power product portfolio, perform ingenious test sequences that convincingly demonstrate the operational safety of your test specimens.
Key Points
- 2-in-1: Combined system integration of the TC.ACS grid simulator and the G5 battery simulator for a complete test environment.
- Modular and scalable design: REGATRON’s AC & DC systems cover the whole range from small power requirements for OBC testing to high power charging stations. The flexible power configurations from 30 kVA to 2000+ kVA AC power or 9 kW to 5000+ kW DC power enable seamless adaptation to a wide range of test scenarios as also future charger testing requirements.
- Vehicle-to-Grid / Vehicle-to-Home: V2G/V2H-applications are becoming increasingly important. Both REGATRON’s AC & DC power supplies offer bidirectional and fully regenerative energy flow for charging and discharging modes.
- Conformity: Regenerative chargers are considered power generation equipment and require conformity with country-specific grid standards. You benefit from REGATRON’s experience with power supply units sold worldwide!
Functional Principle and Description
Charger testing is essential to evaluate and ensure optimal performance, safety, and efficiency of charging systems. It helps identify potential issues with voltage, current, charging speed, overall system health, and standards compliance, allowing you to address problems before they impact device performance or safety.
Charger testers are made up of two separate power supplies. The grid simulator operates the mains side of the DUT, while the DC side of the DUT is controlled by the battery simulator. This setup enables extensive test procedures to be carried out regarding operational safety, functionality and overload behaviour.
Scope of Delivery Example of a REGATRON Charger Tester
Testing of electrical equipment sold internationally requires on the one hand a programmable grid simulator. On the other hand, the corresponding country-specific mains plugs should be available in an uncomplicated way, ideally by using the original plugs straight away without any time-consuming rewiring. So why not combine the two domains to become a test system to which literally any major connector system can be easily plugged in?
Insert your device under test (DUT) into the appropriate plug-in system and activate the selected socket by simply pressing the selector button! The associated specific voltage and frequency data is already stored and is switched automatically to the socket.
The heart of such a versatile REGATRON turnkey test system for 1 – 3-phase electrical equipment is the well-known and successful grid simulator TC.ACS, which provides “power in abundance” with its peak output of 30 or 50 kVA or multiple of. In addition, the system contains quite a number of ready-made power sockets from the major countries. The almost unlimited programmability of all TC.ACS functions makes it possible to call up any country-specific grid conditions, either manually at the press of a button or automatically over .NET API or CAN interface!
The main application area of the test system includes the following use cases:
- Testing of on-board chargers (OBC) for vehicles according to the globally applicable standards Worldwide harmonized Light vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP)
- Testing of the energy consumption of vehicles according to country-specific guidelines
- Testing the energy performance of vehicles at low wintertime temperatures
- Connection of the above test set-up to an already existing test automation level for fully automated procedures
- Country-specific tests of electrical appliances manufactured in different country versions
Why REGATRON Devices for Charger Testing
REGATRON’s AC & DC portfolio with its modular and scalable design offers the right choice for any power and voltage requirements and maximum flexibility for ever-changing requirements. The bidirectional regenerative operation enables efficient testing on the one hand and a wide range of test scenarios on the other. Especially for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) / vehicle-to-home (V2H) applications, TC.ACS with the GridSim application software offers tests according to typical standards such as VDE-AR 4105, VDE-AR 4110, VDE V 0124-100, IEEE 1547 or UL 1741.
Comprehensive charger tests require both DC and AC capability with the possibility to simulate all meaningful real-world disturbances. The TC.ACS and G5 power supplies offer maximum dynamics and precision as well as comprehensive programming options. This REGATRON basic power product portfolio is rounded off with system-integrated test solutions ranging from low to maximum complexity.
