New G5.RegaLink RT: Digital Real-Time Interface for Next-Generation P-HIL Testing

As power electronics become increasingly widespread in the fields of mobility, aerospace, and energy storage/conversion, developers have a growing need to be able to simulate entire system components or complete systems in detail. Achieving realistic results depends on fast and accurate communication between the real-time simulator and the power amplifier, enabling accurate reproduction of even the most dynamic operating conditions for the device under test.
REGATRON introduces G5.RegaLink RT, a new digital real-time communication interface for the G5 series programmable DC power supplies. This new communication component bridges the gap between providers of real time simulators such as OPAL-RT, RTDS, Speedgoat, Typhoon HIL and REGATRON’s versatile G5 power supplies.

The essentials

Unlike conventional analog interfaces, G5.RegaLink RT uses a high-speed digital connection based on the Aurora protocol, eliminating the latency associated with digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversions.

G5 Step Response Times

AnalogG5.RegaLink RT
90 μs45 μstIN time delay setpoint in to power out
42 μs42 μstOUT time delay power out to setpoint out
20 μs20 μsτ rise/fall time current step 10 % … 90 % full scale
170 μs170 μsτ rise/fall time voltage step 10 % … 90 % full scale

The new interface further reduces command delays from 90 μs to just 45 μs, enabling faster system response and more accurate simulation of dynamic electrical systems.

One Connection, Simplified Integration

RegaLink RT communicates through a single SFP connection, eliminating the need for multiple analog signal lines, gain adjustments, offset calibration, and complex wiring. Optical SFP links additionally provide excellent immunity against electromagnetic interference, ensuring reliable operation even in demanding laboratory environments.

Built for today’s Electrification Development

Whether testing battery systems, electric powertrains, aerospace electrical networks, power converters, or energy storage solutions, G5.RegaLink RT enables high-fidelity real-time simulation while keeping setup complexity at a minimum.

What could be more convincing than a compelling example!

Case study: Demonstrate the capabilities of G5.RegaLink RT by a real-time battery simulation based on an enhanced Thevenin model featuring two RC networks. The model was executed on a HIL platform and connected directly to a G5 power supply by a G5.RegaLink RT interface.

The setup was subjected to a current step from -20 A (charging) to +20 A (discharging). Despite the rapid transition, the system accurately reproduced the battery’s dynamic voltage behavior while maintaining stable operation and precise voltage control.

The results highlight the combined performance of the HIL simulator, G5.RegaLink RT, and the REGATRON G5 platform. With a communication delay of only 45 μs, the complete system can reproduce highly dynamic electrical phenomena with exceptional fidelity. The realized response demonstrates how the low-latency digital interface, together with the fast control dynamics of the G5, enables realistic real-time emulation of batteries and other energy storage systems.
